Webinar: The role of AI in supporting apprenticeship quality teams

In this webinar, our Head of Product Dan Tiffany and Account Director Russell Edwards explore how artificial intelligence is transforming apprenticeship delivery and addressing key challenges for quality teams in a rapidly evolving sector.

What you’ll learn:

  • How market changes and efficiency demands are reshaping apprenticeship provision.
  • The critical role of AI in improving learner engagement, supporting functional skills, and driving operational efficiency.
  • A deep dive into Aptem Enhance — showcasing tools designed to streamline delivery, support tutors, and enhance learner outcomes.
  • How data-driven insights can help providers demonstrate tangible outcomes to employers, regulators, and funding bodies.

Discover how AI-powered tools can:

  • Reduce tutor admin time
  • Improve learner progression rates
  • Deliver consistent, high-quality feedback
  • Support accelerated programme delivery
  • Align with employer needs and labour market demands

The following is a summary of key questions and our responses that came through during the webinar:

We have had complaints from employers regarding the use of AI tools for marking, noting that they do not meet minimum accuracy requirements and quite often get it wrong. Is it not concerning to fully embrace AI for marking in light of these limitations?

We accept that there are a lot of challenges with using generative AI for marking, which is why we opted to develop a solution that uses classification AI. You can learn more about the differences between these two models in this video. The main point is that our solution does not “generate” marks or feedback, which may be inaccurate and does not support completely outsourcing marking to an AI tool. Instead, it classifies the answers that the learner has provided based on marked submissions for the same questions and suggests marks and feedback based on tutor responses from your organisation. This can save time while still keeping the tutor in the driving seat. Another advantage is that it can drive better consistency and higher quality marking because, over time, the AI will surface the best possible responses from a group of tutors, promoting best practices in marking across the organisation while still giving individual tutors the final say in how an assignment is marked. This is the important aspect, and one that Ofsted and Ofqual have made very clear is essential when using AI – it can be used to accelerate the process or reduce the administrative time, but it should not replace the vital role of the tutor in reviewing and marking the work.

Will marking aid be able to check for plagiarism or AI misuse?
This is not currently part of the solution, but it is on the roadmap for our partner, Graide, that delivers the classification AI marking. We will be working with them to integrate this into the Enhance marking aid when it is available.

You mention the transcripts being used to summarise. What tools are there in place to train it on voices/dialects across the UK? We currently use transcripts to check what we summarise is in the learner’s words, but sometimes, it can be quite poor at picking up words/phrases.
The transcript is captured by whatever tool is used within your organisation. We offer a Teams integration that automatically adds the transcript to the review for summarisation, and we have found that Teams can capture most dialects. Enhanced reviews will work with other tools that provide transcripts by offering a manual upload of the document created. You have full autonomy over what provider you use to capture the transcript to ensure that it effectively meets your needs.
