Discover how Logic4training, a building services training provider new to funded apprenticeships, set up compliant delivery on Aptem Apprentice and took its first cohort through to full completion.

Logic4training is a building services training provider that moved into funded apprenticeships in 2024. With a small team and no dedicated compliance or management information function, it built its provision on Aptem Apprentice from the start. Every learner in its first cohort passed their end-point assessment, and the provider is now preparing to grow.

Logic4training delivers courses across gas, electrical, plumbing, renewables, refrigeration and smart metering from four centres in Northolt, Basildon, Luton and Sittingbourne. It has trained the sector commercially since 2002.

Its apprenticeship provision delivers the Level 3 Gas Engineering Operative standard to small cohorts through a block-release model. Logic4training is also committed to bringing more women into the trade, an industry where they remain underrepresented.

Full completion

All three learners in Logic4training’s first cohort passed their end-point assessment, one with a distinction. The provider is now on its fourth cohort, having taken its first cohort through to full completion, with all learners on track for success.

Whatever system we set now will be the one we take forward. We wanted the right one, not for the size we are, but for the size we aspire to be.

Mark Krull, Director, Logic4training

The move into apprenticeships

Logic4training had considered funded provision for some time before making the move. Mark Krull, Director, explains the appeal of a steadier funding stream and a natural extension of the business: “Everything we have got, the facilities, the staff, the resource, the experience, the industry connections, means we should be able to deliver apprenticeships. It just seemed like a natural thing to do.”

The route was not straightforward. An earlier move into apprenticeships stalled during the pandemic, before any apprentices had started. Logic4training returned to it in 2023 and delivered its first cohort in September 2024.

Choosing a platform for the long term

From the outset, Mark was clear that the platform would need to serve the business’s ambitions rather than its current size. After comparing several systems, Logic4training chose Aptem Apprentice.

Mark is clear about how that choice weighs up over time: “Were there cheaper ways to do it? Yes. Would they have been cheaper in the long run? No.“

Getting compliance and funding right

For a small provider without a dedicated management information function, getting compliance and funding right was essential. Aptem supports the individualised learner record (ILR) and funding, so the team can stay focused on delivery and growth. “Aptem allowed us to do that, and to grow,” Mark says.

Using a recognised system has also helped in conversations with funders and inspectors. As Mark puts it, when they mention they use Aptem, “it gave them confidence… a system that they’re familiar with, they trust.”

Running the provision day to day

Where Mark sets the direction, Iza Salegui, Head of Apprenticeships and Funding, runs the provision, and does so largely single-handed.

“I manage the delivery, the operations, the planning, the recruitment, the onboarding, the engagement with employers and the funding, and I can do that on my own, thanks to a good, strong system,” she says.

Aptem is the first apprenticeship platform Iza has run herself. For her, having everything in one place, with compliance and funding managed through the system, is the stand-out benefit.

Having everything in one tool is a game changer. It is saving time, saving money, saving resources.

Support that understands the sector

Iza uses Aptem’s support team and Help Centre regularly. She values that the people she deals with have worked in the sector themselves, so their guidance is about achieving what she needs rather than simply navigating features. A quick screen-share often sorts a query in minutes.

“Being able to speak the same language has been a game changer,” she says.

Simple for learners and employers

Mark also highlights how straightforward the platform is for the learners and employers who use it day to day, which helps keep them engaged throughout the apprenticeship.

“It is colourful, it is visual, it is really simple for them to see. The simpler it is, the better they engage,” he says. That engagement helps the team support learners all the way through to completion.

Full completion, and a platform to grow on

Logic4training’s deliberately measured approach is paying off. Its first cohort of three learners has completed, all passing their end-point assessment, one with a distinction. Iza runs a growing provision largely on her own, and credits the platform for how much of the work it takes on: “Aptem does quite a lot of the legwork for us.”

For providers considering the same move, Mark’s advice is to bring in the right expertise and choose a platform built for the long term. Iza’s recommendation is just as clear: “For a small new training provider, I would definitely tell them to go with Aptem.”

Logic4training plans to keep growing at its own pace, extending delivery to its other centres and adding further standards, electrical among them, when the time is right. It also intends to continue working with a women-in-trades organisation to encourage more women into apprenticeships.

Get someone on board who knows what they are doing. Do not do it yourself. And invest in a system, like we did, that you can see taking you forward.
